Since the release of trailer and film in December 2025, there has been significant debate regarding whether the Ranveer Singh-starrer Dhurandhar is based on the life of the late Major Mohit Sharma, AC(P), SM.
While the film draws inspiration from real-world events, the short answer is no—it is not an official biopic of Major Mohit Sharma.
Where this rumors originate?
Speculation began as soon as the first looks and trailers were released.
Fans and military enthusiasts noted several striking similarities between the film’s protagonist and the real-life hero:
- Ranveer Singh’s rugged, bearded appearance in the film closely mirrored famous photographs of Major Mohit Sharma.
- In real life, Major Mohit Sharma famously infiltrated the Hizbul Mujahideen under the alias “Iftikhar Bhatt” in the early 2000s.
- In Dhurandhar, Ranveer Singh plays an operative named Jaskirat Singh Rangi (alias Hamza Ali Mazari) who goes deep undercover in Pakistan.
- Given that director Aditya Dhar previously directed Uri: The Surgical Strike, audiences naturally expected his next project to be another tribute to a real-life Indian military figure.
Official Clarification from Aditya Dhar
As rumors intensified, Major Mohit Sharma’s family—specifically his brother, Madhur Sharma—publicly sought clarity from the filmmakers.
In November 2025, Aditya Dhar issued an official clarification to put the rumors to rest:
“Our film Dhurandhar is not based on the life of braveheart Major Mohit Sharma AC(P) SM. I assure you, if we do make a biopic on Mohit sir in the future, we will do it with full consent and in complete consultation with the family.”
Dhar emphasized that while the film is “inspired by true events” and real-world intelligence operations, the character of Jaskirat Singh Rangi is a fictional composite rather than a direct portrayal of Major Sharma.
Key Differences present are,
| Features | Major Mohit Sharma (Real Life) | Jaskirat Singh Rangi (Film) |
| Identity | 1st Para (Special Forces) Officer | IB Spy/Recruited “Asset” |
| Location | Operations primarily in J&K/Kashmir | Infiltrates the Lyari underworld in Karachi |
| Antagonists | Hizbul Mujahideen militants | Rehman Dakait & ISI Major Iqbal |
| Ending | Martyred in 2009 in Kupwara | Survives to lead “Operation Dhurandhar” |
The controversy reached the Delhi High Court just before film’s release on December 5, 2025.
The court ultimately allowed the release after Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) confirmed movie was a work of fiction.
While Dhurandhar is not a biopic, many critics believe it serves as a “spiritual tribute” to the kind of high-stakes, undercover work that heroes like Major Mohit Sharma performed.
However, for those looking for the true story of the “Iftikhar Bhatt” mission, they will have to wait for a future project sanctioned by the Sharma family.
