S Jaishankar

Subrahmanyam Jaishankar (born January 9, 1955) is an Indian politician and former diplomat currently serving as Minister of External Affairs of India since May 2019. A member of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he represents Gujarat in Rajya Sabha.

Jaishankar is regarded one of India’s most influential strategic thinkers, from a 38-year career in Indian Foreign Service (IFS) to a pivotal role in Union Cabinet.

Early Life and Education

Born in New Delhi, Jaishankar comes from a family with a intellectual and bureaucratic legacy.

Diplomatic Career (1977–2018)

Jaishankar joined IFS in 1977 and served in several roles that shaped India’s modern foreign policy.

Personal Life

He is married to Kyoko Jaishankar (who is of Japanese origin). They have two sons, Dhruva and Arjun, and a daughter, Medha. Jaishankar is known multiple languages, fluent in Russian, Mandarin, Tamil, Hindi, and English.

Note: In 2019, he was awarded Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, for his distinguished service in diplomacy.
