Subrahmanyam Jaishankar (born January 9, 1955) is an Indian politician and former diplomat currently serving as Minister of External Affairs of India since May 2019. A member of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he represents Gujarat in Rajya Sabha.
Jaishankar is regarded one of India’s most influential strategic thinkers, from a 38-year career in Indian Foreign Service (IFS) to a pivotal role in Union Cabinet.
Early Life and Education
Born in New Delhi, Jaishankar comes from a family with a intellectual and bureaucratic legacy.

He is son of late K. Subrahmanyam, India’s most prominent strategic affairs analyst and “father of Indian nuclear doctrine.”

He studied at Air Force School in Delhi and Bangalore Military School. He earned his Bachelor’s in Chemistry from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, followed by an M.A. in Political Science and an M.Phil. and Ph.D. in International Relations from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), where he specialized in nuclear diplomacy.

Jaishankar joined IFS in 1977 and served in several roles that shaped India’s modern foreign policy.

Personal Life
He is married to Kyoko Jaishankar (who is of Japanese origin). They have two sons, Dhruva and Arjun, and a daughter, Medha. Jaishankar is known multiple languages, fluent in Russian, Mandarin, Tamil, Hindi, and English.
